How Does Teeth Whitening Affect Porcelain Veneers?
The problem with having tooth whitening applied after porcelain veneers are already in place is that your veneers will stay the same colour regardless of bleaching. This all too often ends in your natural teeth being a slightly different shade of white than your porcelain veneers, which can be noticeable when you smile.
Another issue that arises is tooth sensitivity. When porcelain veneers are placed on a tooth, a thin layer of enamel must sometimes be removed to allow for an optimal fit. With less protective enamel on your teeth, the hydrogen peroxide used in tooth whitening might cause a significant amount of sensitivity and discomfort. Hydrogen peroxide will not damage the veneer itself, however; in fact, this solution is often used to clean porcelain veneers that have become contaminated by bonding materials or the chemicals that are used to take tooth impressions.
If you have further questions about porcelain veneers or teeth whitening, and how these two procedures can best be used to complement each other, please contact the experienced Toronto cosmetic dentistry team at Haas Dental Centre today.

What is Invisalign®?
Invisalign® uses a set of clear, custom-molded “teeth aligners” to gradually move your teeth into their optimal position. Made of a thin plastic, these trays are virtually invisible once applied to your teeth, and can be conveniently removed when patients need to drink, eat, brush, or floss. Since Invisalign does not use any brackets, wires, or springs, it also produces far less discomfort and soft tissue irritation than traditional braces.
At first, your aligner will feel tight and awkward because it is applying a gentle force to your teeth. As your teeth move to fit the aligner, it will need to be replaced with a new one that guides your teeth into the next stage of alignment. Aligners are usually swapped out in two week intervals. Most patients complete treatment in about a year, although some treatment periods can be as short as six months.
If you live in the Toronto area and are interested in how Invisalign® can correct your teeth, please contact the experienced dentistry team at Haas Dental Centre today to schedule an initial consultation.

Dental Myths and Misconceptions
Over the years, dentistry has dealt with its share of myths and misconceptions that confuse clients, and even cause some of them to avoid dental treatment altogether. Instead of accepting hearsay or popular opinion, you should always ask your dentist about any concerns you may have about a treatment, procedure, or follow-up care.
One of the most common myths about tooth crowns is that once a tooth has been crowned, it will eventually require a root canal. The truth is that root canals are only necessary if the tooth becomes seriously decayed or infected. If you give your crowned tooth proper hygienic care, it can stay healthy for many years to come.
Another misconception is that a hard toothbrush with stiff bristles is the best option for daily tooth care. In fact, hard toothbrushes (and frequent hard brushing) may cause damage to teeth and gums by eroding the enamel, causing gums to recede, and resulting in extreme sensitivity. An experienced dental hygienist can recommend the best type of toothbrush for your particular oral needs.
If you have questions about dental care or a specific general cosmetic dentistry treatment, Dr. Dan Haas can answer them. Please contact the experienced North York, Ontario dentistry team at Haas Dental Centre today to schedule a consultation.

Dental Phobia and Anxiety
Clients with dental phobia avoid dental treatment at all costs; just being reminded about the dentist will trigger a fight-or-flight response. Sometimes, this develops in people who have never had a bad experience with a dentist; they simply fear what might happen because of vicarious learning: scare-stories they’ve heard from other people, negative media portrayals of dentists, and other second-hand knowledge. More often, however, it is the memory of a bad experience at the dentist that causes dental phobia to set in.
Thanks to advances in dental technology and techniques, much of the severe pain associated with certain dental treatments is now a thing of the past. Still, it is often the perception of a dentist as cold and controlling that complicates dental phobia, not just the fear of pain or of a procedure itself.
Because of this, finding the right dentist is the most significant way clients can fight dental phobia and anxiety. Many caring dentists are experienced in helping nervous or anxious clients relax in the dentist chair. Open communication, a comfortable environment, and a dental team that is compassionate, personable and approachable can all go a long way to putting you at ease and making your dentist appointment a positive experience – one that can help you face your anxiety head-on.
If you have dental phobia or anxiety and you have been searching for a dentist you can trust, please contact Dr. Dan Haas and his experienced and caring dentistry team at the Haas Dental Centre today to schedule a consultation in Toronto, Ontario.

TMD Symptoms
Misaligned joints can cause the muscles on one side of your face to work harder than the muscles on the other side of your face. The muscles will try to correct your alignment each time you open and close your jaw. Overworked muscles will become fatigued and cause many symptoms.
Neuromuscular dentistry treatments are used to correct your jaws’ alignment and eliminate your TMD symptoms. Only a general cosmetic dentist with the skill and knowledge of neuromuscular dentistry can diagnose and treat TMD. Many primary care physicians will treat certain symptoms like severe headaches and ear pain with pain management medications. Medications will only mask the symptoms and not cure the cause. Treating the cause of TMD is the only way to find permanent relief.
Common symptoms of TMD are:
• Discomfort while chewing
• Popping or clicking of the jaw when opening and closing your mouth
• Aching facial pain
• Migraine-like headaches
• Tenderness of the jaws
• Ear aches or ringing in the ears
• Pain in the neck, shoulders, and back
• Teeth grinding
Toronto general cosmetic dentist Dr. Haas has training and experience in the specialized field of neuromuscular dentistry. He uses state of the art equipment to find the correct positioning for your jaws and to help your jaws relax before he adjusts your alignment. Once your jaws are properly aligned, you will notice drastic improvement of your TMD symptoms.
If you are suffering from any symptoms of TMD, please contact the cosmetic dentistry team at Haas Dental Centre to schedule a consultation in Toronto, Ontario.
