Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) is caused by the misalignment of the temporomandibular joints (TMJ). There are two temporomandibular joints on either side of your jaws. The TMJ connects your lower jaw to your skull and allows for the full range of movement of your lower jaw.

Tooth-Coloured Fillings

Have you ever been brushing your teeth and noticed what looked like a huge, disgusting black cavity in your mouth? You almost run to the phone to wake Dr. Haas from a sound sleep for an emergency filling when you remember that you USED TO have a cavity there, that what you're seeing is an old metal filling that has turned black with age.

Talk about a cure that's almost as bad as the disease: metal amalgam fillings may start out shiny, but they're never "pretty," and then they become discoloured with age. Once you are aware of the filling, it becomes hard to be comfortable talking or laughing for fear someone else will become aware of it, too.

Sometimes, metal amalgam fillings are not just ugly, they are not functional, and can foster additional decay at or around the filling.

Now there are better alternatives to old metal amalgam fillings. We offer tooth coloured fillings, which can subtly fill cavities, or ceramic inlays and onlays that can fill cavities while strengthening teeth and providing an even more natural appearance. Misaligned jaws or bites often cause symptoms that can affect other areas of your body. This is because the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), the largest nerve cluster in your body, is affected. This condition is called temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) and has many symptoms, including:

Dr. Haas uses a Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) unit to deliver electrical impulses to help your jaw relax. This also increases blood flow in the area. When your jaw is relaxed, the optimum position of your jaw can be determined. This position is then recorded with a K7 scanning unit. Electrical activity in the jaw is measured, and joint sounds are recorded with a sonograph. A 3-D image is made of your jaw, teeth, and mouth which will help Dr. Haas see where the problems are.
